    Role Description: Menopause is associated with increased risk of late-onset Alzheimer’s disease (AD), hypothesized to be mediated by reductions in vascular-protective estrogen. The proposed research and training plan will investigate the effects of estrogen deficiency on the vascular contributions to reductions in cerebrovascular function in healthy women without AD.

    Role Description: Menopause is associated with increased risk of late-onset Alzheimer’s disease (AD), hypothesized to be mediated by reductions in vascular-protective estrogen. The proposed research and training plan will investigate the effects of estrogen deficiency on the vascular and mitochondrial contributions to reductions in cerebrovascular function in healthy women without AD and using ex vivo tissues isolated from rats. Elucidation of mechanisms that contribute to increased AD risk in women is within the NIA’s mission to understand diseases associated with aging to improve and extend the life span.
