    Collapse overview
Dr. Patricia C. Heyn, PhD, FGSA, FACRM has been involved in health disparity, rehabilitation and gerontological sciences research for over 20 years. She is a fellow of the Gerontological Society of America (GSA) and the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine (ACRM). She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at University of Colorado School of Medicine and the Deputy Director of the US Cochrane Colorado Affiliated Center. She is the director of the GSA R13 Mentoring and Career Diversity Workshop for Underrepresented Early Career Minority Trainees. She is also involved in several social justice and inclusion, equality, and diversity representation research and mentoring and career curriculum development. Her research on chronic disease prevention for individuals with disabilities has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, Coleman Institute, J.T. Tai Foundation, and the HHS Administration for Community Living. She has extensive expertise in designing clinical trials for individuals with complex health conditions, including from minority and underserved backgrounds. Thus, through her research she provides guidance on current health services needs of older individuals with disabilities. Her research is impacting clinical research and practice for individuals growing older with pediatric-onset disabilities (i.e. PMID: 30663044, PMCID: PMC6227293) with the goal to improve the person’s healthspan, everyday function, quality of life and societal engagement as they grow older. She is well-known for her research on the prevention and intervention of Alzheimer’s disease through exercise treatments including screening and early identification of risk factors associated with cognitive decline. Her meta-analysis study on the effects of exercise training for individuals with dementia is recognized as one of the most cited articles from the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and is Altmetric highly scored. She is well-known for developing effective mentored evidence-based clinical scientist training programs (i.e. PMID: 26472583, PMID: 24569702 and PMID: 30605502, PMID: 29568518) and she received several awards and honorable mentions for her mentoring contributions. Throughout her career, she has published more than 80 peer-reviewed papers, abstracts and book chapters and she has mentored successfully more than 50 trainees. She is currently conducting a person-centered rehabilitation service outcomes and health care access study for individuals with chronic disabilities. She is a senior faculty and mentor from The Network of Minority Health Research Investigators (NIH NDDK NMRI). She is the associate editor of The Gerontologist as well as the Journal of Aging and Physical Activity and the BMC Geriatric. In addition, she has influenced many important professional organizations such as the 1) chair of the Gerontological Society of America Mentoring Committee; 2) chair of the Neurodegenerative Diseases Networking Group from the ACRM; 3) co-chair and founder of the Complementary and Integrated Rehabilitation Medicine Group from the ACRM; and co-chair of the American College of Sport Medicine Aging Interest Group. Her research has been featured in the La Nación, Argentina's leading newspaper and is frequently cited in various media such as, WIKIBOOKS, ABC 7 News and the Alzheimer’s Association.
