overview IVOR S. DOUGLAS, MD, FCCP, FRCP (UK) Professor of Medicine CHIEF OF PULMONARY AND CRITICAL CARE; MEDICAL DIRECTOR, MEDICAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT (MICU) Ivor S. Douglas, MD is Chief of the Division of Pulmonary Sciences and Critical Medicine at Denver Health Medical Center and the Director of the Medical Intensive Care Unit. He is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado, Anschutz School of Medicine. He is co-chair of the medical center’s critical care committee. He completed medical school in South Africa and Internal Medicine Residency training in London, Great Britain. He moved to the University of Chicago in 1994 and completed pulmonary and critical care fellowship training and achieved Board Certification. Dr. Douglas has been recognized annually for clinical care by 5280 Magazine and Best Doctors in America. In addition to championing the implementation of computerized provider order entry (CPOE) and ICU electronic medical record system at DHMC, Dr. Douglas oversees quality performance improvement for the ICU. Dr. Douglas has received housestaff teaching awards at the U. Chicago, Columbia University and CU School of Medicine and the Outstanding Clinician award from Denver Health. Dr. Douglas is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and the American College of Chest Physicians. Dr. Douglas is an NIH, DOD and industry-funded principal investigator for ongoing investigations in several aspects of clinical critical care including acute lung injury, sepsis, metabolic disturbances in critical illness, ventilator-associated pneumonia, the contribution of alcohol intoxication and withdrawal in critical illness and therapeutic strategies for sedation and delirium in the critically ill. Dr. Douglas is co-investigator for the NIH-funded Prevention and Early Treatment of Acute Lung Injury and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Network (PETAL). Dr. Douglas is a peer reviewer for high impact medical journals; serves on NIH SEP study sections and steering and safety committees for several ongoing international critical care trials and represented the Soc. Of Critical Care Medicine to the Hospital Quality Alliance, a national body that endorsed and reported quality measures for hospitalized patients in the US. He was co-chair of the international Surviving Sepsis Campaign Guideline writing committee and was national PI for the CMMI-funded High Value Healthcare Collaborative's Sepsis Improvement project that is implementing sepsis-bundle care using Toyota Lean systems strategies. He served as Chair of the American Thoracic Society’s Critical Care Assembly program committee, Chair of the ATS Healthcare Policy Committee, and served on the board of Colorado’s QIO, the Colorado Foundation for Medical Care (CFMC).
