Emotional Wellbeing, Health Access Literacy, Health Self-Efficacy, and Meaningful Engagement with the Children’s’ Health System in Adolescents with Chronic Health Conditions
Biography Overview Background: Direct relationships exist between emotional wellbeing and improved patient and healthcare system outcomes in adult populations; yet the science of emotional wellbeing in adolescents is only now emerging as a national research priority (National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, 2018; National Institutes of Health, 2021).
Specific Aims:
SA1: To examine direct and indirect relationships between emotional wellbeing, health self-efficacy, health literacy and meaningful engagement in adolescents living with chronic conditions and test the significance of the proposed relationships in the hypothesized model.
SA2: To examine the nuances of engagement with children’s health system from the perspective of adolescents living with chronic conditions
Design: A parallel explanatory/exploratory mixed methods design is proposed. A prospective observational cross-sectional study is proposed to collect and analyze quantitative data that will inform parallel and purposive recruitment for qualitative interviews to optimize diversity of the qualitative sample. A qualitative interpretive phenomenological inquiry will assist interpretation of the quantitative data.
