The Right Call: Implementing a Sepsis Diagnostic Safety Toolkit in a Pediatric Transfer Call Center to Improve Diagnosis of Children in General Emergency Settings
Role Description: Sepsis is a leading cause of death in children, and an early diagnosis that improves outcomes is less likely in children who are treated in general Emergency Departments (that treat adults and children) compared to pediatric Emergency Departments. In this study, we will adapt, implement, and evaluate tools that have improved diagnosis: a pediatric sepsis diagnostic checklist and diagnostic work system improvements to the consultation phone calls that occur among a general emergency physician, a transfer nurse, and a pediatric emergency physician. This research will improve early pediatric sepsis diagnosis in general EDs where most children receive their first critical hours of care, and it will identify approaches to improving diagnosis in that can be used in other high-risk conditions in emergency settings.
