Dr. Beckham works clinically in the field of Infectious Diseases with a focus on neurological infections. His research focuses on immune responses to pathogens with a specific interest in RNA viruses like dengue virus, Zika virus, and more recently SARS-CoV2. His laboratory also studies innate immune responses in the brain, and the role of innate immunity in neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's disease.

Determining the Mechanism of alpha-synuclein dependent innate immune responses in the brain
Role Description: The grant will investigate novel links between alpha-synuclein and innate immunity in neurons. Alpha-synuclein is known to be a cause of neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's disease. However, a functional role for alpha-synuclein is not defined. We have found that alpha-synuclein modulates interferon stimulated gene expression in neurons. This proposal will determine the specific interactions in neurons that require alpha-synuclein to support interferon stimulated gene expression and will determine the molecular interactions between specific alpha-synuclein post-translational modifications and innate immune signaling in neurons.
