Overview Dr. Beckham works clinically in the field of Infectious Diseases with a focus on neurological infections. His research focuses on immune responses to pathogens with a specific interest in RNA viruses like dengue virus, Zika virus, and more recently SARS-CoV2. His laboratory also studies innate immune responses in the brain, and the role of innate immunity in neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's disease.
Research I01BX003863 (BECKHAM, JOHN DAVID)Jul 1, 2017 - Jun 30, 2021 NIH Defining the Mechanism of Alpha-synuclein Dependent Restriction of Viral Neuroinvasion Role: Principal Investigator |
| R01 AI50305-01S1 (Joaquine Espinosa)Oct 1, 2020 - Sep 30, 2022 NIH/NIAID Inteferon hyperactivity, COVID19, and Down syndrome Role Description: This study aims to define the immune responses in Down Syndrome patients following SARS-CoV2 infection. Role: Co-Investigator |
| PR20005 (J. David Beckham)Jan 4, 2021 - Jan 3, 2024 DOD PRMRP Development of a live attenuated vaccine platform for emerging flavivirus infections Role Description: This project will develop live attenuated vaccine approaches for emerging flavivirus infections including Zika virus, Dengue virus, and Powassan virus. Role: PI |
| R01 NS1350123 (J. David Beckham)Jun 1, 2021 - May 30, 2026 NIH Determining the Mechanism of alpha-synuclein dependent innate immune responses in the brain Role Description: The grant will investigate novel links between alpha-synuclein and innate immunity in neurons. Alpha-synuclein is known to be a cause of neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's disease. However, a functional role for alpha-synuclein is not defined. We have found that alpha-synuclein modulates interferon stimulated gene expression in neurons. This proposal will determine the specific interactions in neurons that require alpha-synuclein to support interferon stimulated gene expression and will determine the molecular interactions between specific alpha-synuclein post-translational modifications and innate immune signaling in neurons. |
