Overview I am a cardiologist and health services researcher with an extensive background in using large datasets to examine and improve healthcare quality. For the past six years, my research has been focused on the evaluation of the clinical outcomes, economics, and social consequences of new health care policies and cardiovascular technologies. My post-graduate training in health services research at the University of Pennsylvania focused on the application of econometric methods of analysis to administrative data, and I have experience using a wide variety of administrative databases (including claims from Medicare, the Veterans Health Administration, commercial insurance payers, and statewide all-payer databases). I am currently funded by a K23 career development award from the NIH / NHLBI in which I am using a mixed-methods approach to understand and identify strategies to improve appropriate use of diagnostic cardiovascular tests and achieve high-value cardiovascular healthcare. Other active areas of research include strategies to reduce low-value care, the impact of vertical integration of cardiology practices into health systems, physician perspectives on medical aid-in-dying, and the impact of value-based payment programs on use of cardiovascular procedures and patient outcomes.
